"THE GREAT DIVAS OF GOSPEL"- A Powerful Women's History Month Dinner-Show Wed. March 25th, '09

The electrifying show, "THE GREAT DIVAS OF GOSPEL," returned to Harlem's world-famous COTTON CLUB, located at 656 W. 125th Street, corner of 12th Avenue, in Harlem, honoring Women's History Month. The last show will be this Wednesday, March 25th, '09, at 7:30 p.m.

"THE GREAT DIVAS OF GOSPEL," pays a nostalgic salute to Gospel's female pioneers such as: The Roberta Martin Singers, The Clara Ward Singers, The Sallie Martin Singers, Marion Williams & The Stars of Faith, The Famous Davis Sisters, Albertina Walker & The Famous Caravans, Dorothy Love Coates & The Original Gospel Harmonettes, and the undisputed Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson. Their incredible lives are re-visited through drama and song. Most importantly, these great divas were a vital part of the Golden Era of Gospel Music (from 1945-60). Their outstanding contributions should never be ignored, for they definitely laid down a solid foundation for today's singers.

The impressive cast includes Lady Peachena, the show's playwright, who gives a riveting portrayal of Mahalia, as well as Betty Cooks, Debbie Sargeant, and Carol Hawthorne.

Since "THE GREAT DIVAS OF GOSPEL," is celebrating its 16th anniversary, Lady Peachena decided to honor some of our living legends. So the special guests for the March 11th show were Rev. Dr. Joyce Taylor, pastor of Prayer & Praise Tabernacle of Jamaica, NY, and Evangelist Gloria White of Cathedral of Praise of Bridgeport, CT. It truly was a roof-raising event with Bishop J.C. White playing the piano.

The March 25th show will be a double treat for it will feature Evangelist Doreen Figueroa, of New Life Tabernacle in Brooklyn, NY, and veteran gospel singer, Kate Smith, of  Harlem's Metropolitan Baptist Church. Their accompanist will be Rev. Frank Baylor, who used to play for the Famous Davis Sisters, and Mahalia Jackson when he was a teenager.

All of these phenomenal singers have been singing Gospel music for almost 40 years. During the show they will all sing 2 or 3 of their most popular hit songs, so expect some spirit-filled fireworks. These ladies can s-i-n-g!
